Sarfaraz Ahmed picks a strong contender to replace Babar Azam as Pakistan’s captain

Sarfaraz Ahmed picks a strong contender to replace Babar Azam as Pakistan’s captain

Sarfaraz Ahmed picks a strong contender to replace Babar Azam as Pakistan’s captain

Pakistan‘s journey in recent ICC tournaments has been marked by highs and lows under Babar Azam‘s captaincy. Following a promising semifinal finish in the T20 World Cup 2021 and a runner-up position in 2022, where they lost to England, expectations were high for the team entering the T20 World Cup 2024. However, early losses to the USA and India in the group stage dashed their hopes of advancing further. Despite rallying with victories over Canada and Ireland, their campaign ended prematurely, highlighting inconsistency and performance challenges.

Criticism and calls for structural reforms in Pakistan cricket

The team’s underwhelming performance in the 2024 edition has triggered criticism from former players and analysts. Sarfaraz Ahmed, a successful ICC trophy-winning captain for Pakistan, has been vocal about the need for comprehensive restructuring rather than superficial changes. He has advocated for reducing the selection committee to three members, emphasizing that the recent removal of figures like Wahab Riaz and Abdul Razzaq does not address the deeper issues affecting Pakistan’s cricketing strategy and performance.

“Major surgery is required if at all we want to put the system on the right track. There should be a three-member selection committee, and mere sacking Wahab and Abdul Razzak would not be enough. Not even Asad Shafiq (a silent spectator) and Mohammad Yousaf are capable of delivering,” Sarfaraz was quoted as saying by Onecricket.

Sarfaraz Ahmed names Babar Azam’s replacement as a captain

Amidst the team’s fluctuating fortunes, questions have emerged about Babar’s effectiveness as a leader. While Babar has showcased his batting prowess, concerns linger over his ability to steer the team through crucial tournaments and maintain consistency in performance. Sarfaraz has openly suggested Mohammad Rizwan as a potential alternative for captaincy in white-ball formats, citing Rizwan’s strong domestic and franchise cricket performances as evidence of his leadership potential.

“Rizwan has proved his captaincy credentials by helping KPK win all domestic events in the past while his performance as Multan Sultans’ captain has been consistent over the years. He is the best choice for the job. Babar Azam is low in confidence and should not be considered for the job,” Sarfaraz concluded.

“Gautam Gambhir doesn’t speak”- Indian player warns teammates

Team India will embark on a new journey this month with Gautam Gambhir as their new head coach. After Rahul Dravid‘s highly successful tenure came to an end last month, the former India opener has replaced him as the new head coach.

Just like his predecessor Rahul Dravid, Gautam Gambhir has also joined the Indian team as a head coach without the experience of coaching an international or state team. However, Dravid had served as the head coach of India and India U-19 teams.

He had also served as an interim head coach for India’s limited-overs series in Sri Lanka in 2021 before taking charge of the team permanently. On the other hand, Gautam Gambhir has only served as a mentor in the IPL so far although he has made a big impact.

In 2022 and 2023, he was with Lucknow Super Giants and helped the newcomers make it to the playoffs in both seasons. In 2024, LSG failed to progress to the playoffs after parting ways with Gambhir. The former India batsman was the mentor of Kolkata Knight Riders this year and helped them win the IPL title after a gap of 10 years.

One Indian player who has seen Gambhir’s working method as a coach from close quarters is fast bowler Avesh Khan. The right-arm pacer was a part of the LSG team in 2022 and 2023 when Gambhir was the mentor and he has opened up on what makes the legendary batsman a ‘team coach’. He explained that Gambhir has a winning mentality and motivates the players to give their 100 percent each time.

Avesh Khan opens up on Gautam Gambhir

“Whatever I have learned from him, it is about the mindset that you should always look to get the better of your opponent and give your 100 percent,” Avesh Khan told BCCI ahead of India’s fourth T20I against Zimbabwe.

“In team meetings, as well as one-on-ones, he would speak less but would convey his point as to what is to be done. He would assign tasks and roles to players and he has always been a ‘team coach’, he always wants to win and everyone to give their 100 percent,” he added.

He is once in a generation bowler: Avesh Khan

During the same interview, Avesh Khan also talked about India’s pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, and hailed him as a generational bowler. The young pacer explained how Bumrah always focuses on executing the plans and urges his teammates to do the same as well.

“Like Virat bhai said, he is a once-in-a-generation bowler, it is true and we all believe so. His style of bowling and his mindset are different, but the main (thing) is his execution, for which we all practice,” said Avesh.

“Whenever I speak with him, he tells me to focus on the execution. If you are thinking of sending down a yorker, then it has to be a yorker; it cannot be a full toss or a half volley, a bouncer has to be on the shoulders; a length ball has to be (aimed at) the top of off (stump),” he added.

Avesh is currently in Zimbabwe for the ongoing five-match T20I series. In 3 games, he has picked up 6 wickets and is the joint-leading wicket-taker in the series. India are currently leading the series 2-1 and will be looking to wrap it up by winning the fourth game on Saturday (July 13).

Zimbabwe Test squad for Ireland One-Off Test 2024 announced

Zimbabwe have announced their squad for the one-off Test against Ireland to be played in Belfast from July 25-29. Craig Ervine is back to lead the side, which also includes another senior player Sean Williams.

Both Ervine and Williams are veterans of Zimbabwe cricket have been serving the national team for a long time now.

But surprisingly, Zimbabwe dropped both the senior players from the T20I squad against India and opted for a more youthful squad, with an eye on the future. Ervine has played 20 Tests while Williams has played 14 Tests so far. Both these players are the most experienced in the Zimbabwe squad.

This will be the first-ever Test match between Ireland and Zimbabwe and it is likely to be a historic occasion for both the teams. Both of them play Test cricket rarely which makes this an important game.

Youngsters get a maiden Test call-up

Alongside opting for experienced players like Craig Ervine and Sean Williams, Zimbabwe have also included youngsters like Clive Madande, Brian Bennett, and Johnathan Campbell in the squad. This is a maiden Test call-up for all these three youngsters, who are currently playing in the T20I series against India.

Among the new faces, Bennett and Campbell have only played T20Is while Madande has played both ODIs and T20Is. Joylord Gumbie is another player who hasn’t made his Test debut yet but is a part of the 15-man squad.

This will be Zimbabwe’s first Test in more than a year. They last played a Test match against West Indies in February 2023 at Bulawayo, in which they lost by an innings and 4 runs.

Zimbabwe opts for pace-heavy squad against Ireland

According to Zimbabwe Cricket, the return of Ervine and Williams will give the side much-needed experience in foreign conditions. The pace bowling seems to be in good shape with Blessing Muzarabani leading the pack.

Blessing Muzarabani, Tendai Chatara, Victor Nyauchi, and Richard Ngarava are the four seamers in the squad. The conditions are likely to assist seam and swing bowling and the role of these four quicks will be crucial in those conditions.

When Zimbabwe last played a Test, Gary Ballance was also part of the Playing XI. But that Test proved to be his farewell Test too as he announced his retirement afterwards. Ballance scored a brilliant hundred in the game and scored an unbeaten 137 off 231 balls in Zimbabwe’s first innings.

Speaking about Ireland, they don’t have much experience of playing in Tests but their players have the experience of playing County cricket in England. Ireland have played just 8 Tests since their maiden Test appearance in May 2018. They lost their first 7 Tests but finally registered a win in their eighth Test when they defeated Afghanistan by 6 wickets in Abu Dhabi.

Shahid Afridi claims Virat Kohli will experience more love in Pakistan than India during 2025 Champions Trophy

Shahid Afridi claims Virat Kohli will experience more love in Pakistan than India during 2025 Champions Trophy

Shahid Afridi claims Virat Kohli will experience more love in Pakistan than India during 2025 Champions Trophy

Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi has recently asserted that Virat Kohli will receive more love and hospitality in Pakistan than in India if he visits the country for the upcoming Champions Trophy 2025. Afridi’s bold statement highlights the potential for cricket to bridge the gap between the two nations.

Virat Kohli’s potential first tour to Pakistan

Notably, Kohli has played all around the world but not in Pakistan. The last time India played in Pakistan was in 2006, two years before Kohli’s international debut. Given that the Delhi-born cricketer has retired from T20Is and is in the final stages of his international career, the 2025 Champions Trophy might be his only chance to play in the neighbouring nation.

Hindered bilateral ties and hybrid model proposal

Not to mention that the bilateral cricket ties between India and Pakistan have been on hold since 2013. Pakistan’s team did visit India for the ODI World Cup 2023 and with India’s matches are expected to be played in Lahore in Champions Trophy, fans anticipated the Indian team’s visit. However, media reports suggest that the BCCI is reluctant to send the Indian team to Pakistan, proposing a hybrid model similar to last year’s Asia Cup.

Shahid Afridi’s wild claim on Kohli

Afridi emphasized the importance of cricket as a bridge for peace and goodwill between India and Pakistan. He reflected on the warm reception and respect Pakistani players received during their tours to India and vice versa, especially highlighting the 2005-06 tour when Indian players enjoyed their time in Pakistan.

Afridi suggested that such exchanges foster mutual respect and understanding, advocating for cricket as a means to improve bilateral relations. He specifically mentioned Kohli, asserting that if the star cricketer visits Pakistan, he will be overwhelmed by the love and hospitality and forget what he experiences in India.

“I will welcome Team India. Even when Pakistan used to tour, we received a lot of respect and love from India, and when India came in 2005-06, all their players enjoyed. There is no better advent of peace than India and Pakistan going to each other’s country and playing cricket. If Virat Kohli comes to Pakistan, he’ll forget the love and hospitality of India. He has his own class,” Afridi told News 24.

Indian Athletes Prep for Paris 2024 Across Three European Nations

Most of the Indian athletics squad heading to the Paris 2024 Olympics, including Neeraj Chopra, will complete their final training in Turkiye, Poland, and Switzerland. This strategic choice aims to ensure thorough preparation for the Summer Olympics. Training camps across Europe will provide optimal facilities for athletes to hone their skills and excel in the global event. This intense preparation is crucial for athletes to perform at their best while representing India internationally.

All Indian Athletics Meeting Date:

All 30 Indian athletes chosen for the Paris 2024 Olympics are scheduled to arrive in Paris on July 28. This gathering will occur four days ahead of the track and field events, which are set to commence on August 1.

This timing allows the athletes to acclimate to the environment and finalize their preparations for the competitions. The early assembly in Paris is a strategic move to ensure that every team member is well-prepared and ready to compete at their best when the track and field events begin.

Neeraj Chopra to Practice in Turkiye:

In preparation for Paris 2024, Olympic and world champion Neeraj Chopra will be training at the Gloria Sports Arena in Antalya, Turkiye. The Indian javelin star has been focusing on his training in Finland and Germany to get ready for the major event. Last month, Neeraj Chopra won a gold medal at the Paavo Nurmi Games in Finland.

To ensure he is at his peak for the Olympics, Chopra has chosen not to compete in any other events before the Games. This decision highlights his dedication to performing at his best when it matters most, as he aims to bring home another gold from Paris in 2024.

Other Athletics To Practice in Poland:

This week, Kishore Jena, a javelin thrower, along with hurdler Jyothi Yarraji, long jumper Jeswin Aldrin, and triple jumper Praveen Chithravel, arrived in Poland. They are currently training intensively at the Olympic Sports Center in Spala to improve their skills and fitness for upcoming competitions. This facility provides expert coaching and tailored training amenities, crucial as they prepare both physically and mentally for their upcoming performances.

On Thursday, the men’s and women’s 4x400m relay teams bound for Paris 2024, along with javelin thrower Annu Rani and shot put athletes Tajinderpal Singh Toor and Abha Khatua, are scheduled to travel to Poland. Meanwhile, steeplechasers Avinash Sable and Parul Chaudhary will train separately in St. Moritz, Switzerland. They will join the rest of the athletes in Poland on July 24, where they will continue their preparations before departing for Paris.

Some Practices in Bengaluru:

Meanwhile, race walkers Akshdeep Singh, Paramjeet Singh Bisht, Vikash Singh, and Suraj Panwar are undergoing training at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) center in Bengaluru in preparation for their journey to Paris.

Additionally, triple jumper Abdulla Aboobacker and middle-distance runner Ankita Dhyani are also utilizing the facilities at SAI Bengaluru for their training sessions. This focused training period in Bengaluru will ensure that these athletes are in peak physical condition before they depart for Paris to compete in the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

James Anderson, Ben Stokes shine as England tighten their grip over the West Indies on Day 2 of Lord’s Test

James Anderson, Ben Stokes shine as England tighten their grip over the West Indies on Day 2 of Lord’s Test

James Anderson, Ben Stokes shine as England tighten their grip over the West Indies on Day 2 of Lord’s Test

England made a spectacular start to Day 2 of the Lord’s Test, bolstered by commanding half-centuries from Harry Brook and debutant Jamie Smith, propelling the team to an impressive total of 371 runs in response to the visitors’ first innings score of 121. Building on their strong batting performance, England’s pace bowling attack dominated proceedings, with veterans James Anderson and Ben Stokes leading the charge. Their formidable display restricted the Windies to a precarious 79/6 by stumps on the second day with Windies stalwart Jason Holder falling to Gus Atkinson on the final ball, further solidifying England’s commanding position in the match.

England’s batting brilliance led by Jamie Smith

The second day began with England’s overnight batters, Joe Root and Brook, continuing their measured approach from the previous day. They quickly brought up the 200-run mark, extending their partnership to 91 runs for the fourth wicket. Despite the West Indies pace trio’s efforts, England reached 250/4 by the halfway mark of the session. However, a strategic bowling change paid off for the visitors as Gudakesh Motie‘s delivery cleaned up Stokes, shifting momentum momentarily. Smith then steadied the ship, contributing valuable runs alongside Chris Woakes, before Motie struck again just before lunch, removing Joe Root with England at 293/6.

Middle order resilience

Post lunch, Woakes and Smith stabilized England’s innings with a 42-run partnership, handling the spin threat effectively. By the 80th over, England had advanced to 329/6, but Jayden Seales struck with the new ball, dismissing Woakes and denting England’s progress. Holder added to England’s woes by dismissing debutant Atkinson for a golden duck. However, Smith’s determined fifty on debut anchored England’s total, helping them reach 371, securing a commanding lead of 250 runs.

England’s bowlers strike early: James Anderson and Ben Stokes

With a significant lead in hand, England’s bowlers took charge with the new ball in hand. Anderson and Stokes struck early to remove Kraigg Brathwaite, Kirk McKenzie and Mikyle Louis, leaving the West Indies struggling at 36/3. Kavem Hodge fell soon after, and despite a brief resistance from Holder and Alick Athanaze, the Windies ended the day at 79/6. Anderson’s dismissal of Athanaze in the 29th over and Holder’s wicket in the 35th further by Atkinson strengthened England’s grip, with the visitors trailing by 171 runs at stumps.
