Athletes across the globe are doing all their last-time preparation. At this moment. South African athlete Wayde van Niekerk will not participate in the Men’s 400m race at the Paris Olympics 2024.

Niekerk Withdrawn His Name from 400m:

Wayde van Niekerk has decided not to compete in the 400m event at the Paris Olympic Games. According to a report, Van Niekerk has withdrawn from the discipline to focus on assisting South Africa’s 4x400m and 4x100m relay teams in their quest for podium finishes. The South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee confirmed that Van Niekerk’s withdrawal was at the request of Athletics South Africa.

In the 2016 Rio Olympics, Van Niekerk achieved one of the most remarkable feats in Olympic history by breaking Michael Johnson’s longstanding 400m world record of 43.18 seconds. Running from lane eight, he stunned the world with a breathtaking time of 43.03 seconds.

He Will Concentrate on the 200m Race:

The South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee have officially announced that Wayde van Niekerk will compete in the 200m event at the Paris Olympics. Additionally, he is included in the pool of athletes eligible for selection in both the men’s 4x100m and 4x400m relay teams.

South Africa has secured spots in both relays, with high expectations following their silver medal performance at the 2024 World Relays. The relay heats are scheduled to begin on August 8, coinciding with the day of the 200m final.

Among the other South African athletes who qualified for the 200m are Shaun Maswanganyi and Benjamin Richardson, who outpaced Van Niekerk to claim victory in the event at the South African Championships. However, Luxolo Adams, another qualifier for the 200m, may miss out due to injury concerns.

“They’ve been dominating…” – Arshdeep Singh breaks silence on animated discussions with Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah

India fast bowler Arshdeep Singh opened up about the animated discussions that he has had with Rohit Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah during the matches. He said that both are legends of the game and revealed that he shares his ideas with them and asks them if he implements them or not.

India pacer Arshdeep Singh was one of the shining lights behind the team’s T20 World Cup 2024 triumph. The left-arm pacer bowled brilliantly throughout the tournament and turned out to be a genuine wicket-taker for the team in the tournament, helping them be at the top with the ball.

Arshdeep Singh was given the role to bowl with a new ball and in the death as well. The fast bowler repaid the faith of the management and made sure that he picked wickets at crucial junctures of the game and helped the team be at the top in pressure situations in the tournament.

Arshdeep Singh came up with a magical performance for India in the recently concluded T20 World Cup 2024. The fast bowler ended the tournament as the leading wicket-taker for India with 17 wickets to his name. His sensational performance saw India win the ICC tournament after 11 years.

During an interaction with Sportstar, Arshdeep Singh was asked about his animated discussions with Rohit Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah at the death. The left-arm pacer stated that both the legends of the game guide him and while shedding light on the same, he stated:

“Rohit bhai and Jassi bhai are legends of the game. They have been dominating the international arena for a long time now. Whenever I have a point, I ask them whether I can implement it. They ensure that my suggestions are taken into account and the field is set accordingly. That helps me focus on the job at hand. As a batter, Rohit bhai understands which are the areas that trouble the batting unit, so he suggests a thing or two in terms of how to bowl an over and those little things matter in crunch times.

“Jassi bhai is a unique bowler with a different bowling action, so the things that work for him might not work for others, but he makes it a point to guide me on how to adjust the bounce and even suggest areas  jahan pe ball jaldi reverse hoga (where the ball will reverse quicker) During the World Cup, he told me not to go for swing early on because on those surfaces, the ball won’t swing much, so it was better to hit the hard lengths.”

Apna bhi toh young khoon hai, so at times, hum bhi disagree kar jatein hain – Arshdeep Singh on Jasprit Bumrah’s suggestions

Arshdeep Singh further talked about suggestions that Jasprit Bumrah gives him and hilarious quipped that him being young blood sometimes doesn’t agree with what the senior pacer says. He mentioned that later he realised that had he listened to what Bumrah said that would’ve worked.

“He keeps telling me those things throughout the match and our discussions often get animated because  apna bhi toh young khoon hai, so at times, hum bhi disagree kar jatein hain un ke saath (I am a young blood, so at times, I do disagree with him) laughs). But later, I realised that the suggestions given by Jassi bhai would have indeed worked had I listened to him. And, I learn from my mistakes and try to get better,” he concluded.

Sunil Gavaskar explains how Team India can become invincible with Hardik Pandya’s inclusion in the Test side

Former Indian cricket team captain Sunil Gavaskar has strongly argued that the Indian Test team would become an Invincible force if Hardik Pandya returns to red-ball cricket. Gavaskar has offered his strategic advice to current captain Rohit Sharma and coach Gautam Gambhir, emphasizing the importance of persuading Pandya to make a Test comeback.

Sunil Gavaskar urges for Hardik Pandya’s return

In a recent interview with RevSportz, Gavaskar expressed his hopes for the next two months, urging the team management to put in significant efforts to convince Pandya to rejoin the Test squad. “I’m hoping that, in these two months, some efforts will be made to try and convince Hardik Pandya to come back to Test cricket,” Gavaskar stated.

Gavaskar further elaborated on his point, emphasizing the transformative impact Pandya’s return could have on the Indian Test team. “If Hardik starts batting at number 6 or 7 and bowls just 10 overs a day, his presence with the bat will make the Indian team pretty much invincible in any country,” Gavaskar said.

Hardik Pandya’s all-round brilliance and potential impact on India’s Test team

Pandya, who played a crucial role in India‘s victorious campaign at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, has already showcased his talent and versatility on the international stage. During the tournament, he amassed 144 runs and claimed 11 wickets, underlining his all-round capabilities.

However, Pandya has been absent from the Test arena for a considerable time. His last appearance in a Test match was against England in August 2018. Over his Test career, spanning 11 matches, Pandya has scored 532 runs and taken 17 wickets, demonstrating his potential as a valuable asset in the longer format of the game.

Gavaskar’s call for Pandya’s return highlights the veteran cricketer’s belief in the balance and depth Pandya can bring to the Test team. With his ability to contribute significantly both with the bat and ball, Pandya’s inclusion could indeed elevate the team’s performance and make them a formidable opponent in the Test cricket.

His ability to break partnerships and control the run rate was crucial in restricting the Freedom’s scoring rate. Akeal Hosein and Justin Dill also contributed with a wicket each, with Hosein claiming 1 wicket for 32 runs in his 3 overs and Dill taking 1 wicket for 35 runs in his 3 overs, before rain ultimately brought a premature end to what promised to be an intriguing contest.

Gus Atkinson hilariously reveals father’s advice before dream Test debut vs West Indies

Gus Atkinson enjoyed a stunning Test debut on Wednesday (July 10) as he starred with the ball to put England in the driver’s seat against West Indies in the first Test.

On a day that was supposed to belong entirely to the retiring James Anderson, Gus Atkinson managed to steal the limelight with his sensational 7-wicket haul. After Anderson and Chris Woakes could not give England the first breakthrough in the first ten overs, Ben Stokes handed the ball to the debutant and he made an instant impact.

After picking up two wickets in quick succession, Gus Atkinson picked up 3 wickets in the 35th over to complete a brilliant 5-wicket haul. He then went on to pick two more wickets as England bowled out West Indies for a paltry total of 121. The right-arm pacer also equaled the English record of most wickets in an innings on Test debut.

Gus Atkinson opens up about his debut:

Speaking at the end of the day’s play, Gus Atkinson opened up on the experience that he went through before making his Test debut. The 26-year-old hilariously revealed that while he was trying to keep things simple, his father’s advice did not help him much. Atkinson senior made sure to remind his nervous son about the importance of the day.

“I was trying to keep as level as possible. My dad was saying, ‘It’s the biggest day of your life.’ And I was saying, ‘Relax!’ I was a bit nervous to start with but once the first few overs were bowled I was pretty calm,” Gus Atkinson said.

“I was a bit nervous this morning. I woke up and all I could think about was the day ahead. I was a bit emotional this morning and then having my family there for my cap presentation – if you could have asked me what I wanted from my day that was pretty close to the top. It was pretty cool. Just to take a five-for is amazing, more than I could have dreamed of,” he added.

Meanwhile, England finished the day strongly as well. At stumps on day one, the hosts were on 189 for 3, Opener Zak Crawley and Ollie Pope led England’s charge with the bat, scoring 76 and 57 respectively. Joe Root (15) and Harry Brook (25) remained unbeaten at the end of the day.

Shubman Gill very similar to Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli? Avesh Khan’s strong take on youngster’s captaincy

The 27-year-old India National Cricket Team pacer Avesh Khan, who has featured in 31 matches across ODIs and T20Is, has shared his strong take on the captaincy of Shubman Gill, under whom he is playing in the India tour of Zimbabwe 2024 five-match T20I series.

Avesh Khan’s remarks came after the conclusion of the third T20I between Shubman Gill-led India National Cricket Team and Sikandar Raza-led Zimbabwe National Cricket Team at the Harare Sports Club on Wednesday, July 10.

It was once again a dominant display from the young guns as India beat the Chevrons by 23 runs to take a 2-1 lead in the series. Batting first, they posted a total of 182/4 on the board, riding on Shubman Gill’s 66 and Ruturaj Gaikwad’s 48. Opener Yashasvi Jaiswal, who was playing his first game on the tour, also made a good contribution of 36 runs with the bat and helped India’s cause.

Defending the target, the Indian bowlers were once again right on the money as they picked three early wickets. The top order of Team Zimbabwe was back in the hut in the 4th over itself and they came under huge pressure. Also, the dismissal of skipper Sikandar Raza in the 7th over made things worse for them.

That was when Dion Myers stepped up and played a brilliant knock. The batsman slammed 65 runs off 49 balls to give India a major scare. However, no support from others meant, he wasn’t able to get the job done.

For India, Washington Sundar was the pick of the bowlers for his figures of 3/15 while Avesh Khan (2/39) and Khaleel Ahmed (1/15) also made decent contributions.

Shubman is a bowler’s captain, gives us the freedom to set our fields and backs our plans – Avesh Khan

Speaking after the match, the star fast bowler Avesh Khan expressed happiness over his performance in the third T20I match against the Chevrons. Avesh Khan also said that he is always trying to create an impact for the team whenever he gets the opportunity and highlighted his readiness for bowling in every phase of the game.

While talking about the captaincy of Shubman Gill, Avesh Khan stated that he is a bowlers’ captain as he gives them a lot of freedom and backs their plans. Notably, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are also called by many as the bowlers’ captains, hence, the praise by Avesh will surely give extra confidence to Gill heading into the next match. Avesh Khan asserted:

“Happy with my performance, I always try to have an impact on the team. I have no preference on where to ball, I am ready to bowl at any phase. Shubman is a bowler’s captain, gives us the freedom to set our fields, and backs our plans. He is responsible for probably getting me 1-2 wickets today.”

Ravi Bishnoi, who is regarded as one of the best fielders currently, took an absolute blinder to dismiss Brian Bennett in the third T20I. Talking about this, Avesh Khan said that the leg-spinner always produces such catches. The right-arm pacer said:

“(On Bishnoi) He is a good fielder, always takes catches like these, you would have seen it in the IPL as well. He always wants to take such extraordinary catches.”

Fans react as England dominates Day 1 after Gus Atkinson rips apart West Indies on his Test debut at Lord’s

Fans react as England dominates Day 1 after Gus Atkinson rips apart West Indies on his Test debut at Lord’s

In James Andersons farewell Test for England during the first match of the three-game series at Lord’s against the West Indies, debutant Gus Atkinson emerged as the standout performer, delivering a mesmerizing bowling spell.

Electing to field first, England initially struggled but found their stride thanks to Atkinson’s brilliant debut performance. The Surrey quickly dismantled the West Indies batting lineup, finishing with outstanding figures of 7/45 in just 12 overs. His spell included a remarkable feat of taking three wickets in a single over, demonstrating both pace and precision on his Test debut.

Momentum shift at Lord’s: England’s resurgence

The opening Test at the iconic Lord’s witnessed a dramatic shift in momentum. West Indies, led by Kraigg Brathwaite and debutant Mikyle Louis, made a promising start before Atkinson intervened with crucial breakthroughs. England tightened their grip with disciplined fielding, restricting West Indies to 61/3 by lunch, thereby reclaiming control of the game after a slow start.

Gus Atkinson’s phenomenal bowling spell

The second session belonged entirely to Atkinson, who continued to dominate with his exceptional bowling prowess. His seven-wicket haul on debut dismantled the West Indies batting lineup, exposing their vulnerabilities. Atkinson’s ability to swing the ball effectively troubled the West Indies middle order, with Alick Athanaze, Jason Holder and Joshua da Silva among his victims after lunch. Chris Woakes complemented Atkinson’s brilliance with a crucial wicket, contributing to West Indies’ collapse for a mere 121 runs.

Records tumble: Atkinson’s debut feat

Atkinson’s remarkable debut performance also etched his name in history, securing the third-best figures for an English pacer on debut. His achievement surpasses former international John Lever‘s record, highlighting Atkinson’s immediate impact at the highest level of cricket. The best-ever debut figures by an English bowler remain John Ferris’s 7 wickets for 37 runs against South Africa in 1892, underscoring Atkinson’s place among England’s elite debutants.

England’s response: Building a commanding lead

England began their innings cautiously, losing Ben Duckett early but regaining composure through Zak Crawley and Ollie Pope‘s resilient partnership. Both batters notched up fifties, with a 94-run stand for the second wicket steering England towards a commanding position. Despite interruptions due to bad light, Joe Root and Harry Brook continued to consolidate England’s dominance, aiming to extend their first-innings lead. As play halted for the day, England held a substantial lead of 68 runs with Root and Brook poised to capitalize further on Day 2.
