“Proud of our fielding” – Sikandar Raza brutally mocks Zimbabwe players after 3rd T20I loss to India

The Sikandar Raza-led Zimbabwe National Cricket Team went head-to-head with the Shubman Gill-led India National Cricket Team in the third T20I of the India tour of Zimbabwe 2024 at the Harare Sports Club.

The third match was a crucial one for the Chevrons as after facing the highs of the first T20I they faced crushing defeat in the second T20I. Under Sikandar Raza’s leadership, the hosts pulled off a massive upset by defeating the star-studded Indian team by 13 runs.

Despite a complete batting failure, it was the bowlers who got the job done for the side. A score of 115 posted by Zimbabwe looked like a walk in the park for the Indian team until the bowlers brought out their A-game and restricted them to 102/10 in 19.5 overs.

The next match, however, went completely against Zimbabwe as the Indian batters displayed sheer class and decimated the hosts with their aggressive batting. Zimbabwe conceded a humongous 234 runs and their batters only managed 134, which resulted in them facing a humiliating 100-run loss. The Zimbabwe batters couldn’t get going and they weren’t able to trouble the Indian bowlers with only two batters touching the 30-run mark.

In the third T20I, India once again batted first and the Zimbabwe bowlers did a good job, but no support from the fielders meant that they weren’t able to get quick wickets. The visitors were allowed to post 182/4 on the board and Sikandar Raza along with Blessing Muzarabani bagged two wickets each for the hosts.

During the run-chase, the Zimbabwe top order once again collapsed which put them under tremendous pressure. Dion Myers displayed a great batting with a 65-run knock, but it wasn’t enough for the win and they lost by 23 runs.

I think it’s the fielding again, we are proud of our fielding but the wheels came off today – Sikandar Raza

At the post-match presentation ceremony, Zimbabwe skipper Sikandar Raza launched an attack on their poor fielding in the match as they dropped several catches, which eventually cost them the game. Sikandar Raza stated:

“I think it’s the fielding again, we are proud of our fielding but the wheels came off today, we gave away 20 extra runs and we lost by 23 runs. We still have problems at the top but I have utmost faith in them that they will come good some time.”

Sikandar Raza while speaking about the situation of the opening pair in Team Zimbabwe, stated that they have tried 15 different openers but things haven’t panned out well for them. He also slammed the senior players of the team for not stepping up in the match. Sikandar Raza said:

“We have tried 15 different partners (openers) in the last year and a half or so. There is a lot of cricket going on in the country and club cricket has revived. It’s time that our players including myself take up the responsibility. The youngsters making mistakes is acceptable but the senior players need to step up. You cannot fix a problem by creating another problem, we have picked 3 openers for a reason. The openers that have been picked up should be given a run.”

Sikandar Raza signed off by praising pacer Blessing Muzarabani for continuing to impress with his bowling. He said:

“(On Muzarabani) He has been outstanding, sometimes the rewards don’t come but in the long run the rewards do come.”

Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma snubbed as Ramiz Raja labels Jasprit Bumrah as the greatest-ever all-format cricketer

Jasprit Bumrah ended as the “Man of the Tournament” in the recently concluded T20 World Cup 2024. He took 15 wickets in the tournament and ended as the third-highest wicket-taker.

He was the best bowler on show throughout the tournament and made an impact with the ball every time he came to bowl. In the final against South Africa, he picked up the early wicket of Reeza Hendricks. He then came back to dismiss Marco Jansen in the 18th over of the South African innings.

Former PCB chief Ramiz Raja who saw Bumrah from very close quarters in the T20 World Cup has hailed him as a legend across all three formats.

“In my book, Jasprit Bumrah is a legend in all three formats. There is no one greater who has played all three formats. (Toh aap dekh rahe hai, ek ladka kaha se utha hai, usme confidence nahi tha, uska awkward bowling action hain) So you can see, where this boy came from, he lacked confidence, had an awkward bowling action. He was unfit, but he came back, and now he has made India win the World Cup,” Ramiz Raja said on his YouTube channel.

Bumrah’s exceptional performance in the T20 World Cup 2024 has earned him a plethora of plaudits, with his remarkable achievement of taking 15 wickets from eight matches with an economy rate of 4.17. His ability to deliver under pressure was his biggest asset throughout the World Cup.

The former PCB Chairman further hailed him for making a stupendous comeback from injury. He missed the 2022 Asia Cup and T20 World Cup 2022 and made a return for the ODI World Cup 2023. He has quashed retirement rumors as well.

T20I Retirement Is A Long Way Away: Jasprit Bumrah

“It’s (my retirement) a long way away. I have just started. Hopefully, it is far away now” said Bumrah.

Meanwhile, Bumrah’s statement on retirement came on the back of The retirements of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja from T20I cricket. Rohit retired as the only player to win the T20 World Cup as a player and captain. Kohli finally had a T20 World Cup to show for his efforts.

There are further reports that Bumrah Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will be rested for the upcoming ODI series against Sri Lanka. The trio are aiming for a comeback in the Test series against Bangladesh.

India’s tour of Sri Lanka will have three ODIs and three T20Is from July 27 to August 27. Bangladesh will then tour India for two Tests and three ODIs from September 19 to October 12. After Bangladesh, India hosts the Kiwis from October 16-November 5 for three Tests. Then they play a series against South Africa away from home featuring four T20Is between November 8 and 15 before a five-match Test series in Australia starting on November 22.

England will begin their men’s Test season with a three-match series against the West Indies at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground on Wednesday, July 10. The season’s start was delayed by a month due to the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup taking place throughout June. Despite the delay, the excitement is palpable as a mostly sunny London sets the stage for two teams currently navigating transitional phases in the longest format of the game.

James Anderson’s farewell Test

The first Test will be notably significant as it marks the farewell of James Anderson, a living legend of the game. With 188 Tests under his belt, Anderson’s achievement as a fast bowler is unprecedented and may never be surpassed. As he prepares to bow out of international cricket, all eyes will be on Anderson as he chases a couple of milestones, including one involving the late Australian spinner Shane Warne. Fans and teammates alike hope to see Anderson end his exceptional career on a high note.

Series progression and team dynamics

Following the opener at Lord’s, the series will move to Trent Bridge and Edgbaston. England will be testing their Test cricket capabilities with a slightly revamped pace attack, where Chris Woakes stands as the only senior bowler. The team aims to blend experience with emerging talent in their quest for victory.

For the West Indies, the challenge lies predominantly with their batting, a common hurdle for visiting teams in England. The team will need to build on their previous bowling successes, such as their performance at the Gabba, especially in the absence of their experienced pacer Kemar Roach. How they adapt to the English conditions will be crucial in determining their success in the series.

Hardik Pandya or KL Rahul likely lead India vs Sri Lanka ODI series

Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma‘s highly anticipated return to the cricket field has been reportedly postponed. The ICC T20 World Cup-winning pair is expected to miss the upcoming One Day International (ODI) series against Sri Lanka. This absence leaves a significant gap in India’s lineup for the series. Hardik Pandya or KL Rahul are likely to lead India vs Sri Lanka ODI series.

In a related development, Gautam Gambhir is set to replace Rahul Dravid, who has recently stepped down, as India’s next head coach. With this change in leadership, India is expected to appoint either Hardik Pandya or KL Rahul as the captain for the Sri Lanka series. This selection will be crucial as the team looks to maintain its competitive edge and build momentum ahead of future international fixtures.

KL Rahul Or Hardik Pandya: who is going to lead India?

Star all-rounder Hardik Pandya and wicketkeeper-batter KL Rahul are vying to lead India in the upcoming three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka next month. Reports indicate that Indian captain Rohit Sharma, along with Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah, will be rested for the tour, which includes three T20Is and three ODIs.

According to a PTI report, with Rohit unavailable, Pandya, who served as his deputy during the T20 World Cup 2024, is a strong candidate to captain the team. KL Rahul, who led India in the last ODI series against South Africa in December 2023, is also in contention for the captaincy. Hardik has captained India in three ODIs, while Rahul has led the team in 12 ODIs, winning eight of them.

The 31-year-old right-handed batter from Karnataka, who is a regular in the ODI squad, last played for India in January 2024 during the first Test of the five-match series against England.

BCCI’s take on resting Virat and Rohit

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have already had a long and tedious 2024. Both players were deeply involved in their respective IPL 2024 teams after which they played for India in the T20 World Cup 2024.

Rohit was the captain for team India while Virat’s smart knock in the finale led India to victory. According to the BCCI, this is exactly why both these players are being rested for the India tour of Sri Lanka. Rohit Sharma also has to play and lead the team in the Champions Trophy 2025.

“Both are automatic choices in ODI set up and the three 50-over games against England before the Champions Trophy is good enough practice for them. For next few months, they both will prioritize Tests and India will play 10 of them between September to January,” a Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) source told PTI.

“The Champions Trophy will happen in mid February and they don’t need to go for a week-long 3 match ODIs in Sri Lanka. If they want, they are most welcome but I guess they would want rest,” the source added.

James Anderson labels Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum as ‘DOGS’ after they tell him to retire

Veteran England bowler James Anderson revealed the reason behind his international retirement after the upcoming Lord’s Test match against the West Indies. James Anderson stated that his decision was confirmed during a meeting with captain Ben Stokes, coach Brendon McCullum, and managing director Robert Key.

The England management has asked James Anderson to retire from Test cricket after the upcoming Test against the West Indies, aiming to build the team for the 2025-26 Ashes series. Anderson has represented England in 187 Tests and took 700 wickets at an average of 26.53, including 32 five-wicket hauls.

James Anderson made his Test debut for England in 2003. The right-handed bowler will conclude his illustrious career at Lord’s during the first Test against the West Indies, starting on July 10. He is the leading wicket-taker for England in Tests and also has the chance to retire as the second-highest wicket-taker overall.

Wouldn’t Say It Was A Surprise – James Anderson

Speaking at a press conference, James Anderson recalled his calm reaction when informed about his retirement from international cricket. Anderson stated that he wasn’t surprised by their perspective and thanked them for explaining their decision to him.

“I wouldn’t say it was a surprise because when the three big dogs invited me to a hotel in Manchester for a chat I didn’t think it was just a normal appraisal. I had a suspicion that that was going to be the case. I think they were surprised at how calm I was and I was probably surprised at my reaction. I wasn’t overly emotional or angry about it. I saw their point of view and appreciated them taking the time to lay it out for me,” said Anderson, as quoted by BBC Sport.

Trying To Focus On To Stop Myself Crying – James Anderson

James Anderson acknowledged that emotions will fluctuate during his final game, aiming to prevent himself from becoming emotional and to remain composed throughout the match. The veteran cricketer emphasized his priority of helping England secure a victory.

“I’m trying not to think too much about the game itself yet, or how I’d feel about it. The big thing for me this week is wanting to play well, bowl well, and get a win. I’m sure the emotions during the week will change, but right now that’s what I’m trying to focus on to stop myself crying,” Anderson added.

James Anderson is on the verge of surpassing Shane Warne’s legendary record, needing just nine more wickets. The 41-year-old pacer is the only fast bowler to pick 700 wickets in Test cricket. He is second only to former Indian skipper Sachin Tendulkar in terms of matches played in the five-day format.

Gus Atkinson and Chris Woakes have been included in the playing XI alongside Anderson. Atkinson has featured in nine ODIs and three T20s in his career. The 26-year-old was also part of the squad during England’s recent Test tour of India. Woakes is set to lead England’s pace attack in the second Test at Trent Bridge.

In a thrilling match of the Major League Cricket (MLC) 2024, the San Francisco Unicorns defeated the Los Angeles Knight Riders by six wickets at the Grand Prairie Stadium in Dallas on Monday, July 8. The star of the show was New Zealand opener Finn Allen, who put on a spectacular display of power-hitting against the Knight Riders’ bowling attack.

Finn Allen’s carnage against LAKR

Allen smashed Shakib Al Hasan for three consecutive sixes in the fifth over, sending the ball deep into the stands. He continued his onslaught in the seventh over, hitting Andre Russell for two more maximums, taking his tally to five sixes across the two overs.

Here’s the video

Allen’s blistering knock of 63 off just 37 balls, at a strike rate of 170.27, laid the foundation for the Unicorns’ successful chase. He was ably supported by Matthew Short, who scored a quickfire 58 off 26 deliveries, as the pair added 116 runs for the second wicket.

Match summary

The Knight Riders, after being put in to bat first, posted a competitive total of 165/6 in their allotted 20 overs. Shakib (35) and Russell (40 off 25 balls) were the main contributors with the bat for the Knight Riders. For the Unicorns, Brody Couch and Haris Rauf picked up two wickets each, while Abrar Ahmad and Liam Plunkett chipped in with one apiece.

In response, the Unicorns got off to a flying start, thanks to the explosive batting of Allen and Short. Allen, in particular, was in a belligerent mood as he took on the Knight Riders’ bowlers, especially Shakib and Russell.

The Unicorns eventually reached their target in 15.2 overs, winning the match by six wickets. Spencer Johnson was the pick of the bowlers for the Knight Riders, finishing with figures of 3/30.

Words from the match-winning duo

Speaking at the post-match presentation, a delighted Allen said, “It was a great team effort. The bowlers set it up nicely for us, and we just had to go out there and express ourselves. I’m glad I could contribute with the bat and help the team get over the line.

Short, who was named the Player of the Match, echoed Allen’s sentiments of the dressing room, saying, “We are joking in the change room as to who can hit the biggest sixes. I think the pitch got better to bat on under lights, probably dew played a part as well. This tournament has a lot of good players.

The win puts the Unicorns in a strong position in the MLC 2024 standings, while the Knight Riders will look to bounce back in their next match. With players like Allen and Short in their ranks, the Unicorns will be a force to be reckoned with in the tournament.
