Chic and Affordable Cocktail Dresses For Women Over 50

I’m often asked about cocktail attire, but truth be told, it’s not something I talk about much because I rarely have the occasion to wear them myself. With that said, I know how tough it can be to find a formal dress that checks all the boxes, especially for women over 50. If you’ve got a big event coming up, you’re probably wondering where to find the perfect dress, what styles will flatter your figure, and how to accessorize. Well, today, I’m here to answer all those questions! Plus, I had a blast shopping for some chic and affordable cocktail dresses just for you!

What is the dress code for a cocktail party?

Cocktail attire is all about striking that perfect balance between elegance and fun. It’s dressy, but not so formal that you’d mistake it for black-tie. For women, this usually means a knee-length or midi dress, paired with stylish accessories and either heels or dressy flats. The key is to feel polished and confident!

As for what to avoid, steer clear of anything too casual—if you wouldn’t wear it to a nice dinner, it’s probably not right for a cocktail party. I usually shop for something nicer than I would typically wear to church. Also, I skip anything overly revealing, like a super short or see-through dress.

Traditionally, cocktail dresses are short or midi length, falling around or just above the knee. That said, I think maxi dresses can work, too, as long as they don’t give off a ballgown vibe. I like to keep it elegant but with a little playful edge!

Tips for Finding the Perfect Cocktail Dress

You might not have a cocktail dress in your current wardrobe. Don’t fret; finding the perfect cocktail dress doesn’t have to be overwhelming! Start by looking for a style that makes you feel confident and comfortable. Focus on flattering cuts that work well for your body shape. If you prefer a classic look, stick with timeless colors like black or navy, but don’t be afraid to play with bold colors or patterns if that feels more like you.

Classic Black Dresses

You can never go wrong with a classic black dress, especially one like this that you can wear time and time again! It’s a blank canvas that you can dress up or down with various accessories, shoes, wraps, and clutches. Whether you’re heading to date night, a wedding, work party, or graduation, a great LBD can adapt to every occasion with just a few accessory changes!

If you’re looking to upgrade your little black dress to one with a little more pizazz, look for a dress with some embellishments like beading or sequins. This one has an absolutely gorgeous neckline! This long-sleeved cocktail dress is a midi length that makes you look long and lean! Just add a silver earring and a clutch, and you’re ready to go!

Lace Dresses

Would you believe me if I said I loved this dress so much that I’ve had it in two colors?! It really is just as good as the rave reviews say that it is. It’s not only fun, but it’s super flattering and full of personality!

Here’s another gorgeous lace dress to check out! I’m loving how it’s lined for comfort but still lets the lace peek through on the sleeves and hem. This plum color is absolutely stunning for fall and winter.

A-Line dresses are one of my favorite silhouettes. In general, they are usually fitted from the shoulders to the hips and then flare a bit to the hem. Most body shapes can wear them since they can accentuate your curves, and create some when you don’t! This dress has all kinds of fun things going on like lace, sequins, and a keyhole back!

This A-Line dress is a fit and flare in a beautiful burgundy satin called Elderberry that will be so pretty for fall and winter! It has a v-neckline that’s perfect for showing off a glamorous neckline, and a belted waist to help highlight the smallest pair of your waist. It also has pockets which is always a win in my book!

Shift Dresses

I know many of us women over 50 prefer a bit of arm coverage, and the flutter sleeves on this dress are great for that! Plus, the fully lined chiffon fabric is not only flattering, but also super comfy. It drapes beautifully, while being light and breathable.

If you’ve got a fall event on the calendar, a cocktail dress with a removable jacket is a smart choice. This jacket will keep you cozy on those chilly autumn evenings or if the AC is cranked up too high indoors. And the best part? It’s easy to slip off if you get hot, so you can stay comfortable no matter what!

Midi Dresses

This dress from Nordstrom is absolutely stunning! It’s chic and classic, and I absolutely love the one-shoulder design, which is going to turn heads. It comes in so many different colors. The dark magenta, fuschia, or rouge would be my choice if you’re looking to be the star of the show, but it also comes in lots of classics like black or navy.

Ignite Evenings Mikado Floral Print Scoop Neck 3/4 Sleeves Tie Belt High-Low Party Dress

This flare midi dress brings all the drama! I am loving bold floral prints this year, and I love how it’s paired with a plain black bodice so it doesn’t overwhelm your frame. Plus, it features a scoop neck, a flattering tie waist, and a trendy high-low hem that adds just the right amount of flair.

How to Accessorize a Cocktail Dress

When accessorizing a cocktail dress, less is often more. A statement piece like bold earrings or a chic clutch can elevate your look without overwhelming it. Keep the jewelry to one or two standout items—like a pair of sparkly studs or a delicate necklace. Don’t forget to add a pair of dressy heels or stylish flats to complete the outfit. And if your dress is on the simpler side, you can have fun with colorful accessories or a pop of texture, like a metallic bag or a fun wrap.

Black is elegant, dressy, and appropriate for cocktail attire. This lace blouse and wide-leg dress pants outfit are elegant, and I love the coverage. I know most of us don’t want our arms to show, and it’s also got a very modest neckline, which I like.

Yes, a woman can absolutely wear pants for cocktail attire! A well-tailored pantsuit or a stylish jumpsuit can be just as chic as a dress. The key is to choose something elegant and dressy, like a sleek, fitted pantsuit in a luxe fabric or a jumpsuit with a sophisticated cut. Pair it with statement accessories and heels to keep the look polished and cocktail-appropriate. It’s a modern twist on cocktail attire that still feels glamorous! You can read more about my thoughts and tips on dress alternatives in this post.
