European summer-The Thrifty Six – Nancys Fashion Style

What can I tell you about a European Summer! Well, hold on, IT’S SHIT! At least this summer was. We only got a bit of sunshine until it was half of July. August is pretty good until now, but hey, that is way to late!! So what to wear in such a summer? Layers!

Welcome to The Thrifty Six. We are a group of international fashion influencers who meet once a month in our little space on the internet to share our thrifty outfits. On the third Monday of every month, we will all share an outfit based on a theme that features pre loved wardrobe pieces. Shopping and reselling pre loved clothing is so much better for the environment and you can find some of the best fashions in thrift or charity shops. The Thrifty Six are here to inspire you to shop second hand.

My layered outfit for a rainy summer

European summer

European summer might be a fashion style, I can tell you a real European summer is wet and grey! And cold! So what I wore this season is this jeans, and you know how I feel about jeans. But it was to cold and wet to wear something really nice. I layered it with my new shirtdress, so if it would start to warm up, I could take of the jeans, which is the only pre loved item in this outfit. Luckily August is finally sunny and warm and I am embracing my dresses and skirts finally!

How to dress in a European summer

Emma of  Style Splash

stylish summer look

According to Refniery29 the “European Summer” or “Euro Girl Summer” aesthetic “puts an emphasis on “clean”, elevated outfits — this time taking elements from classic French and Italian style”. I’ve teamed a postcard print satin wrap blouse by Twisted Wunder that I bought on eBay years ago, with classic sailor style navy trousers from River Island and a basket bag from Zara. I added classic gold and pearl jewellery to finish the look.

I saw a fun video about how the same dress could be worn in different European countries and decided to do that with this navy dress.

While the dress isn’t thrifted, the skirt and hat are preloved and this look reminds me of a girl from Spain.

This month’s T6 theme is ‘European Summer’ so I’m wearing red, white and blue to represent Great Britain…

…and also, a little nod to the Paris Olympics…

…but mainly because I want to show off my beautiful red, white and blue vintage maxi skirt.

This 1970’s original is an eclectic mix of patterns, colours and fabrics with the interesting addition of completely see-through crochet sections at each side.

The pretty perforated panels provide perfect ventilation on this, the hottest day of the year!

At 34˚C in the shade, this is a great European Summer day!

dressed for a european summer

I have never been to Europe in the summer but based on Nancy’s description of it, I dressed for fickle temperatures and a chance of rain with lightweight layers and useful accessories. I wore a thrifted slip dress and jacket both in cheerful pink prints because they coordinated with my very old pink and black rain galoshes. A cloche hat offers practical protection from the sun or the rain. Now I am ready for any European summer weather!

I thought it would be fun to create an outfit from a mish-mash of various “European Summer” aesthetic trends I found online. Denim, white T, wide leg pants, button down shirt, loose-fitting silhouettes, leopard print, silk square scarf, pendant necklace, simple mix-and-match jewelry, neutral colors, and flashes of red.  I anchored my look with two thrifted pieces: my trusty button-up denim shirt and a vintage silk scarf in aqua and red by Italian brand Roberta di Camerino (the hand-rolled edges are amazing). Loved how this outfit turned out!

Let’s hope our European Summer will last for a few more months! So I can wear all my lovely skirts and dresses so much that they will bore me, lol. We hope to see you here next month again with a new theme and pre loved clothes!
