Melbourne Renegades Welcomes Cameron White as Head Coach

Former Australia white-ball captain Cameron White has been appointed as the new head coach of the Melbourne Renegades, returning to the club where he once played. White has committed to a three-year contract, taking over from David Saker, who left the position in May after the Renegades finished seventh in the BBL.

At 40 years old, White is stepping into his first head-coaching role. He has, however, gained significant experience as an assistant coach under Greg Shipperd at the Sydney Sixers over the past two years and previously at the Adelaide Strikers.

“I’ve got so many great memories here as a player and achieving success, so to be back in Renegades colours several years later is a thrill,” White expressed. “The idea of working with this playing group – some really exciting players there, both young and experienced – is really exciting. I’m really looking forward to ripping in and starting my journey as coach.”

White will lead a Renegades squad that includes standout players like white-ball specialist Jake Fraser-McGurk, top spinners Adam Zampa and Nathan Lyon, and recent recruit Josh Brown.

The Renegades also secured the second pick in the BBL overseas draft, announced on Thursday, which presents an opportunity to further enhance their team.

During his playing career, White represented Australia in 142 matches across all formats. He was particularly known for his role as a middle-order batter in white-ball cricket. Although his Test career was brief, limited to four matches in 2008, he captained the T20I team six times and the ODI team once in 2011.

White was part of the Australian team that won the ICC Champions Trophy in 2009 against New Zealand. Domestically, he was instrumental in the Renegades’ only BBL championship win in 2019.

As Victoria’s longest-serving Sheffield Shield captain, White scored over 7000 first-class runs from his debut in the 2000-2001 season until his final match in 2019.

White’s deep connection to the Renegades and his extensive coaching experience are expected to bring new energy and perspective to the team, aiming to guide them back into BBL contention.
