Will India women sweep off multi format series with South Africa

South Africa women’s extensive multi-format tour of India is nearing its end, with the T20I series set to begin in Chennai on Friday. India has been dominant throughout the tour, starting with a 3-0 sweep in the ODI series. Fans are excited to see if India women sweep off the multi format series with South Africa.

India’s strong performance continued in the Test match, where India achieved a decisive ten-wicket victory on the final day. As the T20I leg begins, the Indian team looks to maintain their winning streak and finish the tour on a high note, showcasing their strength across all formats of the game.

Here are the South Africa players to look out for

While the women in blue celebrate their victories and look forward to winning the T20 matches as well, they need to be on the lookout for these South African players to ensure their win.

Laura Wolvaardt’s team has shown moments of strength and resilience against India’s challenges but has not managed to secure a win on their tour so far. With the return of Chloe Tryon and the likely inclusion of Marizanne Kapp in the bowling lineup, South Africa will present a tough challenge for India in the upcoming T20Is.

India’s main task will be to contain Wolvaardt and Kapp. Laura Wolvaardt, the South African captain, has been remarkably consistent in T20Is this year, missing only one match against Sri Lanka. She has amassed 247 runs in five innings, including a century and two half-centuries, at a strike rate of 132.08 in 2024. Her composed approach and capacity to take calculated risks were evident during the ODI series too.

Kapp may make her bowling debut on the tour during the T20I series. After focusing on batting in the ODIs and Test due to a minor back injury and workload management, she is likely to pose a threat to India’s openers Mandhana and Shafali Verma with the new ball.

Batting at No. 3, she has been aggressive, scoring 208 runs in six T20Is this year at a strike rate of 136.84, including innings of 75, 60, and 44. Sune Luus describes Kapp’s current form as exceptionally well-rounded.

Pitch conditions for the T20 matches

The MA Chidambaram Stadium hosted nine IPL matches this year during the peak summer season, where the average score was 170 runs per match.

Surprisingly, spinners accounted for only 25 out of the 99 wickets taken during these games. However, in the one-off Test against South Africa, Indian spinners were exceptionally effective, claiming 19 of the 20 wickets over four days.

South Africa’s spinners contributed three wickets out of five taken in the match. Adding to the dynamics, just two days prior to the opening T20I, Chepauk experienced late-night rain accompanied by strong gusts of wind.

The weather forecast predicts thunderstorms in Chennai during the late evening hours almost daily until the conclusion of the series.

The contrast in bowling effectiveness between IPL matches and international Test cricket at the same venue highlights the adaptability of teams to varying conditions, while the weather conditions could potentially impact match strategies and outcomes in the upcoming T20I series.
